Our Story
Safer 17 was born after a family tragedy exposed a larger, preventable problem along the notoriously dangerous Highway 17 in Murrells Inlet.
We know this stretch of road is not unique. Highway 17 spans multiple states and countless communities facing similar risks. Our goal is to create meaningful change locally — and build a model that can be implemented elsewhere along the corridor.
Through research, data, and lived experience, a difficult truth became impossible to ignore: traffic violence is not inevitable. Sometimes crashes are the result of human error. Often, they are the result of infrastructure that has failed to keep pace with a rapidly growing community.
Safer 17 is working to transform Highway 17 in Murrells Inlet through proven, data-driven infrastructure solutions that prioritize human life — because everyone should be able to leave their home and return safely.
